Hear Dinneen's Story......... I am a 41-year-old single mother of an 8-year-old daughter Kelsey. My degree is in nursing, and I work in the pharmaceutical industry. Last year I went to my normal doctors’ visit for my yearly physical and was told that since I was 40 I could get a baseline mammogram. I had been checked and there was nothing of concern just something to get scheduled over the next few months when I got time. I regularly checked myself for any issues and never had a concern. A short time later, I was doing a self exam and came across a lump in my left breast. Being a nurse, I ran through all the scenarios in my mind but thought it was rather large and not there last month so it must be a hematoma from the puppy (Dana) or my daughter jumping on me. I made a doctors appointment and was sent for a mammogram but reassured that based on my age, etc. it was probably cystic. After a mammogram I was sent immediately for an ultrasound…based on those results a biopsy was scheduled and performed. On December 7, 2009, I was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Breast Cancer and was triple negative (meaning the hormone therapies and other treatments used for this type of cancer were not an option for me). On December 17, 2009, I had a lumpectomy and started chemotherapy February 1, 2010. I went through the first cycle of treatment with triple therapy and wound up in the hospital with a life-threatening pneumonitis. I was discharged home after a 20 day hospital stay to recover before they could start the second course of therapy as I was left with severe lung damage. When I returned home I wasn’t able to walk up my two front steps. While I was healing and rehabbing, I got approved to do my radiation therapy. I was very fortunate as radiation was not difficult on me. Based on all the adverse reactions I experienced and that I currently had fibromyalgia with muscle and neurologic issues, it was decided based on the risk benefit profile that an additional course of chemotherapy would not be done. My doctor jokes with me that I am the poster child for side effects and about the irony of the whole thing since I actually work in Drug safety…good thing I have a sense of humor. I have been exceptionally fortunate to be blessed with supportive family and friends. I cannot begin to express my gratitude for all peoples’ kind thoughts, actions and prayers.
